Congor Bay

Congor Bay is tucked away on the South East coast of the island in an undiscovered corner of paradise. The thirty-three acres which make up the Congor Bay property are remote yet easily accessible. Formerly the location of Barbados External Telecommunications Limited’s Earth Station, the property is a unique site visible from the St John’s Church yard. It is within a rural area whilst being only a short distance away from the island’s international airport. The property is complemented by its right of way access to a sandy beach on the east coast. This quiet haven was chosen for the site of the first Earth Station on the island. Built in 1972, the facility provided the Island with modern satellite telecommunications during an era when Barbados was expanding its markets and striving to become internationally competitive. The property was purchased from the owners of Bath Plantation, one of the original sugar plantations scattered throughout the island. Ruins of the plantation factory buildings from bygone days can still be viewed from the property and some residents in the surroundings villages remember the property before the Earth Station brought an element of commercialism to this rustic neighbourhood. In addition to the antenna tower, a number of buildings were constructed to accommodate equipment and employees operating the Earth Station. The facility functioned independently and included generators to provide emergency power. The main building held the essential control room, offices and a conference room. A smaller building housed the generators. These buildings are within a secure 10 acres compound. The additional 23 acres is prime agriculture land, which was under cultivation until recently. The Future: The possible uses for Congor Bay are many – Small Hotel/Health Spa Congor Bay has the advantage of its proximity to the Island’s sole international airport. In addition, its secluded, sandy beach and safe swimming make it an ideal location for a private luxury establishment. The tower has the potential for development into a restaurant with stunning 360 degree views of the island. The surrounding rolling countryside is perfect for nature trails and outdoor activities. Retirement Village This location could be also be considered for a ‘retirement village’. The existing buildings could be converted into a modern efficient community-type complex for the elderly with various support facilities such as a small shop, restaurant and laudry facilities, as well as outdoor activities. Luxury Apartments The property could easily be converted into luxury apartments or a luxury villa. Commercial Computer or data-processing companies and other high technology industries, many of which already operate in Barbados, may be interested in conducting their business in special locations. The property would allow for the development of an industrial park with the possiblity of some housing and support facilities for employees.
